Reader’s Question:

My daughter is a first-time driver. How can I purchase affordable first-time driver insurance here in Nevada?

Martha

Las Vegas, NV

Martha, you have nothing to worry about. Because even though prices of first-time driver insurance are typically fairly high, you may be able to reduce the prices by following some useful tips.

It is not just there in Nevada that first-time driver insurance policies cost so much. It is actually normal all throughout the country. This is because first time drivers pose great risk on the roads. And in the case of your daughter, since I presume that she is a teenager, statistics prove that teenagers make more claims yearly due to involvement in vehicular accidents. This is the main reason why auto insurance companies would not cover first-time driver auto insurance for a very low price.

So, let us go now to the techniques on how to reduce first time driver auto insurance premiums.

If you have not bought your daughter her car yet, help her choose. Now, which vehicles to choose? Older and safer vehicles mean reduced risk, which in turn translates to lower premiums.

Also, since your kid is a girl, there are discounts available for female drivers because they are considered less risk on the road than male drivers. You might want to take advantage of the available discounts for this.

You might also consider taking advantage of your daughter’s good grades in school, if she does have good grades in school. Good grades in school show how responsible your daughter is and may be when it comes on the road. You are sure to get some discounts because of this.

Following these easy tips would bring you affordable first time driver insurance for your daughter. Good luck!

Reader’s Question:

I heard that your auto insurance is higher if you reside in an apartment complex in Las Vegas? Is this true?

Ben

Las Vegas NV

Yes, it is possible that if you live in an apartment complex in Las Vegas Nevada, it may affect your car insurance rates. Insurance carrier’s rating systems and insurance guidelines vary. The state insurance laws govern what factors an insurance provider can rate a person using and then an insurance carriers have their own rating systems. Such factors include the garaged location of the car. Parking your vehicle in an apartment complex is a rating factor that your insurance carrier may use if your state laws permit and your insurance providers guidelines have it as part of their rating system.

Of those insurance carriers that do rate using the garaged location of your car, many find it a higher risk if you reside in an apartment complex. There are more automobiles in the specific area with parking area and roadways that may possibly increase the chance of a car insurance claim. Some think that the risk of vandalism and or theft is also higher since it is easy to access the vehicles. In most areas, such as towns or college the insurance carrier may show that there is a higher cases of accidents in an apartment complex that is inhabited primarily by inexperienced or younger motorist.

Reader’s Question:

I just obtained my valid MA Learners permit recently. My mother lives in Las Vegas Nevada and I am planning to visit her often. Can I drive using my MA learner’s Permit in Nevada? If so what are the restrictions for this?

Smith

Las Vegas, NV

Here are the driving restrictions for teens in the state of Nevada:

  • Young drivers may not transport any person under the age of eighteen, except for immediate family members, for the first 6 months after the license was issued.
  • Young Drivers under eighteen may not operate the vehicle between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. This applies to all motorists under the age of eighteen until they turn eighteen, regardless of when the license was issued.
  • Nevada has a .02 blood alcohol limit for motorists under twenty one.
  • Young driver licenses can be suspended for any of the same reasons as adult licenses and also for non-driving alcohol/drug offenses, habitual truancy or firearms violations.

So it seems like you can drive in the state of Nevada with your MA learner’s permit but with restrictions. I would suggest that you contact the Nevada DMV to find out for sure if all the restrictions and conditions you will have on you while in Nevada visiting your mother in Las Vegas Nevada.

Reader’s Question:

Hello. I am 18 years old and just obtained my G2 in Las Vegas. I was wondering if I can drive my friend’s car or my parent’s car that is insured without me being insured in?

Paul

Las Vegas, NV

With your G2 most insurance providers in Las Vegas will require you to be listed to your parent’s insurance policy since you are part of their household and now have more driving responsibilities with fewer restrictions while operating your parent’s cars.

If your parents do not notify the insurance provider in Las Vegas of your G2 licensing status then it is likely that you will not be properly covered if you were to get involved in an accident in your parent’s car. As for driving a friend’s car, the owner of the vehicle is typically responsible for anyone who operates their vehicle with permission so your friend will need to check with their insurance company to verify if you would be covered to drive their vehicle.

Your friend will need to keep in mind that if you are covered by their insurance company and you have an at-fault accident while driving their vehicle, it will go on their insurance record and your friend will get his/her insurance premium affected. Insurance does not follow the motorist; it goes with the vehicle.

Reader’s Question:

I just want to know how long do you have to carry an sr22 in Nevada?

Jean

Thank you for asking Jean.

The SR-22 in Nevada can be required to an individual for a certain period of years depending upon the reason that you are required to get this financial responsibility certificate.

If you are mandated by the state to obtain an SR-22 due to being without an insurance while driving and got involved in an accident , the Nevada Department of Vehicles lists that you must carry that SR-22 coverage for 3 years.

The Nevada DMV discusses the SR-22 proof of financial responsibility under the suspension and revocation section. If you are mandated to purchase an SR-22 form to restore or reinstate your drivers license that was suspended or revoked due to a DUI or major traffic offenses, the period of required coverage begins when you actually reinstate your license, regardless of when this happens.

According to the NV DMV, there is no limit of time or statute of limitation on the requirements for the sr22. The DMV does not notify motorist when the period of required coverage ends. To get information when your SR-22 coverage can be ended, you may contact the Nevada DMV directly.

If you do not maintain SR-22 coverage during your required time period to carry it, your insurance provider will inform the DMV. Once the DMV has been notified about the cancellation, DMV will suspend your license and you will be informed by certified mail. To have your license reinstated you will need to again get SR-22 coverage and the required period of coverage will start over again.

Goodluck!
